When I was a freshman at BYU the hardest decision ahead of me was what to major in. Well one day I realized what it was that I wanted to do. I remember how excited I was and I remember calling my parents. I was full of excitement as I told them that I wanted to major in Fashion Merchandising. They didn't quite have the excitement that I did. Not only did they lack the excitement, they did not want me to major in something like that. As they said, "You don't need a degree to work at Nordstrom."
Now I know that is true, but I have always loved design and clothes, always! And I didn't want to work at Nordstrom, I wanted to design, I wanted to be a buyer, I didn't really want to work in retail. When I was little I used to collect shopping bags. I even had a box full of tags off of different clothes that I had. Does anyone remember Units, Girbaud, or Esprit? I do, I loved it. I grew up in a small town and I lived for the times we would visit grandma and get to go to the mall.
Since college, I have earned a degree (just not in fashion), gotten married, had children, and become a full time mom. I still love shopping and I still love clothes. I like to be busy. My husband is an entrepreneur and has encouraged me to do something. I have always wanted to design denim, but I am a little out of the loop. So recently I acquired a new hobby (it is not collecting shopping bags), I started selling clothing for Modbe.
I started out just buying their swimming suits (which are awesome). We have a trip to Hawaii planned for April. Between me, my mom, and my sister, we bought a lot of suits. And then I decided I might as well sell this stuff myself. Now I am not a fan of the home party things, but so far I have done 2 parties and they have been so much fun. I told my husband, this wasn't to make money, just for fun. Fortunately I have made a little money and I am having a lot of fun. Modbe is having a design contest this summer which I hope to enter. So here I am living a little more of the dream.
