New Shelves

Saturday was a busy day.  I ran 10 miles, went to a family baptism and luncheon, picked out a new paint color, painted a little room in my basement, and went to IKEA where I bought these awesome shelves.  I am loving them and they fit my space perfectly.  I keep thinking of lots of other spaces where I might want more of these.  I can't wait to get organized and fill it all up.  But then it won't be as pretty.

Family Fun

Last week for our little family fun night, we went and watched my brother race his motorcycle. It was a lot of fun. Highlights included the little kids who raced on tiny motorcycles and four wheelers, a girl on a motorcycle who was an amazing rider, and watching my brother, who's not too shabby! It was a lot of fun!

The next day we went to the Oquirrh Mountain Temple Open House.  It happened to be pouring when we went.  We got great parking, right across from the tent where we watched the movie, but I was still drenched by the time I got in the tent.  And I even had an umbrella, it was quite the storm.  Every time I have driven by this week, it has been sunny and beautiful with lots of families snapping photos.  We will have to go back....

This week we have been plagued with the fever/swine flu.  I took Tyler to the doctor because he had a fever and I wondered about the swine flu.  The only symptom he had was a fever, but they are calling everything swine flu right now.  So I guess we've got it.  Kirk woke up freezing this morning.  I thought for sure I would get it before him.  So far Jacob and I have gone unaffected.  I really hope I don't get it.  So no family fun this weekend:(  Lucky for us whatever we have is super mild, consists of headache and fever.  No vomiting, coughs, runny noses, or sore throats, knock on wood!

The Principal's Office

Jacob was off to the prinipal's office today.  Well, actually the Assistant Principal.  And he went fighting all the way.  Apparently he and a girl got into a fight at recess yesterday.  They were both to blame and according to the principal they are now friends.  She called me today so I would be aware of the situation and let me know she was sending home a note for me to sign.  Jacob forgot to mention the situation to us.  I had no idea until the school called.  And when they called I figured he must have been sick because this morning he was trying real hard to get a temperature and complain about feeling weak.  I almost fell for it.  I am going to have my hands full when this kid is a teenager.  Right now I think it is pretty darn funny though...

Tarjay

Lots of times when I ask my cute friends where they got "that" shirt or "those" pants, they say, "Target!"  I NEVER find cute clothes at Target.  I love Target for many reasons, but finding cute clothes for myself has never been one of them.  I am tall enough that shirts, shorts, skirts, and pants can fall a little short on me.  About a week ago I was strolling through Target and found the cutest t-shirt.  I loved it.  It looked like something I might see at Buckle.  I was doubtful that it would fit, so I went to the dressing room and tried it on.  I was surprised to see that it fit and I still really liked it, so I bought it.  It was cheap, stylin', and cute.  I was stoked.  I wore it the next day.  Then a few days later, I saw someone else wearing it.  And then it just kept happening.  I think everyone bought the exact same shirt as me, I keep seeing it everywhere!  I hate it when that happens...

My Dad

For Father's Day, Ethan wrote and illustrated a book for his dad.  It was the best!  It is called "My Dad," and it is so cute, I have to share it.  The first page says, "Dectacatin to Dad."  And here is the story....

This is my dad his name is Kirk
My dad can play sports
But my dad can't stand on his head
My dad can camp
But he can't kill a snake
My dad can work
But my dad can't kill a bear
My dad can play chess
But he can't do girls hair
My dad can golf
But he can't stop working
My favorite thing about my dad is he works for money
I love it when he plays with me
My dad is a very good dad.

The illustrations are so cute!  It had us giggling all day yesterday.  Ethan is such a funny boy.  His birthday is coming up and he gets to have a party and invite friends this year.  I keep offering all kinds of fun options, and he just wants simple everyday stuff like a basketball game or playing on the water slide.  He is very easy to please and such a sweet guy to have around, he is always asking to help.  We sure love having him.  And we love our dad too.  He is great!  And I too am glad that he works for money.  I love being a stay at home mom, most of the time.

Just What I Needed.....

This week has been a little rough for me.  I am not even sure why.  I decided I was addicted to sugar and tried to go without.  I was not a very pleasant person for most of the day.  Until the evening rolled around and I found some chocolate that had been stashed in the cupboard.  And then I was happy.  For real.  Later in the week while I was waiting in line at Target, I remembered how good that chocolate made me feel.  So I bought a Dove chocolate bar.  Have you had one of these, oh they are sooo good!  I am embarrassed to say that I have eaten 2 of them this week.  But I did have to share one of them, even though I didn't really want to.  I don't understand how chocolate can make me feel better.  Does anyone know?

In Search of Sunshine.....

Last weekend while my husband was at a scout camp (in the rain), I took off with the kids and headed south.  The further south we went, the warmer it got.  It was great.  We waded in the river, the boys swam, we sat outside and watched the sun go down, and we didn't miss the rain.  Then we had to come home, and it is still raining.  If it weren't for the bright yellow dot, called the sun, on the weekend forecast, I might be going south again this weekend.

On Monday we went and hit a bucket of golf balls for FHE.  Golf is Kirk's very most favorite thing.  I have never been and haven't ever really had a desire to get into it.  But I actually kind of liked it.  Good thing Kirk doesn't read my blog, I would never hear the end of it!

This Week Has Been a Little Confusing

I think it is still June, but sometimes I wonder.  I have turned on the fire place more than once.  I used my seat heater in the car, and when I went to the craft store, I saw lots of autumn leaves and such.  Where is summer?  I wish it was here where I live.....

Wax On, Wax Off

Today I got my eyebrows waxed for the first time.  It was the first "wax" I have ever had.  Once in awhile I pluck out a stray, but that is it.  My eyebrows don't look much different.  That is why I am not even going to post a picture, you probably wouldn't notice.  But there is a subtle difference and I like it and the waxing part didn't really hurt.  The area around my eyebrows is so clean and soft.  I think I will do it again.  I might even get some other areas waxed, upper lip, chin, and maybe someday even a bikini wax, who knows?

It's About Time for Some Pictures......

Last night I cut off all of my boys' hair.  They now have "summer cuts".  They were all excited about it last night.  This morning though, was a different story.  Jacob didn't want to go to school because he, "hates being a twin and now I look just like David."  Funny boy!  Usually it is David who is worried about his hair...

Reggie loves to sunbathe on the little plastic picnic table.  We get a kick out of seeing him laying there.  We do clean it before we eat on it.

My kids thought that this might be Dora's house.  I am pretty sure she doesn't live in Rockville though.

Ethan really loves chess.  Chances are if you visit us, he will want to play a game with you.  I still have not learned to play and it works out pretty good.  Lucky for them they have a great dad who spends time playing with them.

Girls wearing kimonos, crossing the street in Japan.  I also saw boys wearing kimonos, I didn't know that boys wore them, but they do.

Helping to build a dam at a creek in Moab.  After this, we had to go buy some more shoes for the weekend (I only packed tennis shoes).  Luckily we found crocs (yes, real crocs) on sale for 1/2 off!

This is my little niece.  She was born on my birthday as well as my grandma's birthday.  She is a real cutie!  But I loved this little outfit in particular.  I wish I could pull it off.  Don't you just love those socks?

I love my silly twins.  It is so hard to see your babies grow up!

Who Am I?

Some people meditate, some people do yoga, some people have quiet moments, and I play the piano.  Some of the best inspiration I get comes while I am playing music on the piano.  I am a very average player, with no special talent, but I do have a love of music.  Today the song, "Who Am I?" from Les Miserables ran through my head.  And I wondered, "Who am I?"

When I was young I wrote in my journal religiously.  As I look through I see all different sides of me.  And the older I got, the more defined I became.  I used to have such a thirst for knowledge.  While most of my peers were reading cliff notes and abbreviated books, I read them all.  I didn't want to miss out.  I loved learning.  I was also very insecure.  I remember making a conscious decision in my head that I was not pretty.  By doing this, I was able to quit worrying about being cute or getting attention from boys.  I still wanted to be pretty and liked attention, but this way, I avoided disappointment.  Whatever happened was just a cherry on the top.  I looked forward to college and imagined I would meet someone at BYU and get married in the Washington DC temple.  Don't ask me why I thought that, I really have no idea other than I really liked Washington DC.  Eventually I thought I really knew who I was and what I wanted.

So life didn't turn out exactly as I thought but just as good as I could have hoped for.  And there have been lots of re-defining moments along the way.  Like when I got married and changed my name.  That was kind of hard for me.  All of the sudden my identity had been changed.  New name and a new role as wife.  And later I became a mother, a completely new role.  I recently posted about hobbies and figured it was time to regain some or at least develop some talents.  It just seems like I am always having to redefine, which is ok.

The other night my neighbors (a teenager and his mother) visited our home.  The teenage son was writing an essay on love and needed my husband and I to answer 10 questions about love.  Most of them were actually pretty tough.  And we were not allowed to scroll through and see the others' answers.  There was one question that said, "What is more important in the long run, chemistry or compatibility?"

I answered that chemistry was important in the beginning and compatibility was more important in the long run.  Sounds like the answer of a mom now that I am writing about it.  I also wrote something like, "compatibility will help you solve problems, but chemistry won't."  Later Kirk was answering the same questions.  His answer to the same question-chemistry.  I thought, "oh, he is just a guy."

Then we proceeded to disagree about the activities of our children.  He wants to enroll them in football and I don't.  And we both have a lot of good reasons.  And so this morning I decided he is probably right, chemistry is important in the long run.

As I pondered my future as a mother, "Am I going to have to give in and be the sports mom who totes her kids all over the valley and we never stay at home as a family for dinner?  What kind of mom am I going to have to be as we make these kinds of decisions?  What things will I have to change?"  I realized that I have been making changes my whole life.  And that sometimes it is because I want to change, sometimes, I don't want to change, and sometimes I just change.  I am still trying to define myself.  Can you imagine an eternal marriage with a person who changes so much?  So for today I would like to change my answer to chemistry.  Even with all of the changes, redefining moments, compatibility, and non-compatibility, we still have enough chemistry that we want to be together.  What more could I ask for?

And a final thought on "Who Am I?"  My immediate answer to that is a child of God.  And that is the most important thing about all of us.  And today as I struggled with ways to help my children I thought of a line of that song that says, "and so my needs are great."  My needs are great and I am grateful for a Heavenly Father who is looking out for me and my family.  We need all the help we can get.

Tragedy!

My son took it upon him to show our nest and eggs to his friend.  Resulting in the disappearance and destruction of our little eggs.  He claims that only 3 fell out and broke.  However, this morning there were 0 eggs.  It has been a sad morning at our house.  And I can't believe how upset I got at my son.  First of all I was angry that this all happened yesterday and he didn't say anything and second, I guess I was enjoying and looking forward to seeing the eggs and their progress as much as my kids.  Oh well.
